Disassembling the engine and gearbox from the 500
Materials:
- car jack,
- 2 jack stands,
- ratchet or wrenches # 7-8-10-13-17,
- Phillips screwdriver,
- large flat head screwdriver and a small on,
- pliers,
Raise up the back of the 500 and place it on the 2 jack stands high enough so you can get under it to work.
Disconnect the negative battery cable and unscrew the fuel cap to relieve the pressure.
1 - Open the hood, disconnect the wire of the license plate light, and the cable that holds the hood. Close the lid and unscrew the nut with a #10 wrench, and then remove it.
2 - Disconnect the wires from the spark plugs and remove the distributor cap, as well as the small ground wire that connects to the body with a #8 wrench shown below p.11

3 - Remove the belt guard heat shields where you see marked with 2 yellow dots.......

4 - Disconnect the wire of the oil bulb located next to p.10

5 - Remove the air filter cover.
6 - use a #7 wrench to unscrew the clamp to the carburetor and use a #8 wrench to remove the the rest of the sheath. located at p.13
7 - use 2 #8 wrenches to loosen and remove the clamp on the accelerator cable. With a small screwdriver remove the cord retainer being careful where it might jump. Remove all. p. 13
8 - Loosen the clamp of the fuel line at the point where it comes from the metal tube. For safety cap off the line so you do not leak fuel. located by p.16
9 - with a #8 and #10 wrench remove the wires from the dynamo. located by p.14

Let us now get under the car:
10 - with a #7 wrench remove the bottom sheet to the motor.
11 - disconnect the air hose by loosening the metal clamp. p. 19

12 - use a #13 wrench to unscrew the 4 bolts on each side of the axle joints, remove them with a large screwdriver,careful for the spring that is at the end of the axle shaft p.1
13 - With a #10 + #17 wrench and a pair of pliers remove the clutch cable. with a #13 wrench unscrew the cord retainer p.15

14 - With a pair of pliers remove the cable that tracks your miles . located by p.2
15 - With a #10 and #13 wrench unplug the fitting of the gear lever located by p.3
At this point, place the jack under the engine at the height of the gearbox to keep it balanced.
16 - Get back under the car and with a #17 ratchet wrench unscrew the 2 bolts holding up the transmission. Be very careful as the Jack may not be balanced correctly . p. 6

17 - get out from under the car and use a # 13 wrench to remove the back Muffler tube/pipe, loosen the 4 nuts 2 on each side at the rear. p.12

18 - Lower the jack slowly slowly until you can go with a #13 wrench to unbolt the positive lead of the starter motor and with a pair of pliers remove the cotter pin that holds the steel wire of the starter. p.4

Now everything is free, pull it toward you slowly making sure there is not any restraints.
If you want to remove just the engine, followed up in point 11 and continue with:
11/1- With a #10 wrench remove the three bolts of the sheet to the pan between gearbox and engine
11/2- With a #13 wrench remove all the nuts of the Bell housing.
11/3- place the Jack under the engine using a wooden block to prevent from deforming the Cup.
11/4 – run the operation referred to in point 17.
